It is part of the body – and that sounds so obvious that you hardly need to say it. And yet for decades, conventional dentistry has treated teeth as if they were independent of everything else: repaired, crowned, filled, extracted – without asking what this tooth might have to do with the rest of the body.

Holistic dentistry asks precisely this question. It sees the mouth as part of a complex organism in which nothing exists in isolation. Materials used in the mouth have an effect on the whole body. Amalgam fillings continuously emit mercury vapor – a neurotoxin that accumulates in the tissue and can stress the immune system, the nervous system and the body’s detoxification capacity. Titanium implants, long praised as completely biocompatible, are increasingly suspected of triggering immune reactions in sensitive people. Root canal treatments can leave behind chronic foci of inflammation that cause discomfort far away from the mouth.

This is environmental medicine in the strictest sense: the realization that what is introduced into our bodies – whether through air, food or dental materials – does not remain without a trace. Biological dentistry therefore works with materials that are as compatible with the body as possible, does not use amalgam, tests implants for individual compatibility and takes the patient’s detoxification capacity into account in every treatment decision.

So anyone who repeatedly has unexplained complaints – chronic fatigue, immune deficiency, neurological symptoms that cannot be clearly explained – should include the mouth in the overall assessment. Not as the first suspect, but as a possible contributor. Because sometimes the problem is literally in a tooth – and nobody has asked about it yet.

Teeth in TCM: tooth-organ relationships through meridians as connecting paths

In traditional Chinese medicine, vital energy – known as qi – flows through the body along pathways called meridians. These meridians connect the surface of the body with the internal organs, and each tooth lies on one of these energy pathways. If the function of an organ is impaired, this can be reflected in the associated tooth – and vice versa: a diseased tooth can block a meridian and put a strain on the connected organ. This clearly shows the tooth-organ relationships.

This is not an esoteric theory, but a clinically observed phenomenon that is also receiving increasing attention in biological dentistry. More and more dentists today are working with so-called tooth-organ schemes because they are experiencing in practice that teeth and organs are not separate worlds.

Upper jaw and lower jaw: the line between past and present

Before we turn our attention to the individual teeth, it is worth taking a look at a dimension that deserves special attention in psychosomatic dentistry: the question of whether a problem is located in the upper or lower jaw.

In this understanding, the upper jaw is attributed to the ancestors – the family heritage, the ancestors, the genetic and emotional imprint that we have brought into the world. What the generations before us have given us: Beliefs, traumas, patterns, strengths and wounds that often go deeper than we realize. Teeth that repeatedly cause problems in the upper jaw can be an indication that something from the family system is waiting for attention. What stories have been passed on? What burdens have been passed on unspoken?

The lower jaw, on the other hand, stands for your current life – for what you are carrying, shaping and experiencing here and now. It is the jaw of the present, of personal responsibility, of personal history. Problems in the lower jaw invite you to question your own life: What are you currently biting through? What are you swallowing? What do you want to say but don’t dare?

So if you have a tooth that keeps drawing attention to itself, it’s worth taking a look in two steps. First: Is it in the upper jaw or the lower jaw? This gives you the first orientation – is it something that comes from your ancestors or something that is bothering you in your current life? The second step is to see which organ this tooth is assigned to – and which psychological issues this organ carries with it. These two pieces of information together result in an astonishingly precise invitation to self-reflection.

An example: Your incisor in the upper jaw keeps causing problems. The incisor belongs to the kidney-bladder meridian – an organ that stands for vitality, primal fear and existential security. And because the kidney is a couple’s organ, it also carries the fears and insecurities in close relationships. Located in the upper jaw, the question could therefore be: What fears were inherited in my family? Were there generations before me who had to fight for survival, who knew no security? Or – and this is the kidney as a pair organ: What fears were passed on in partnerships? Did my parents, grandparents, ancestors know fear in their relationships – fear of loss, of abandonment, of not being seen? And do I carry on these patterns in my own relationships without realizing it? A lower molar, on the other hand – in the lower jaw – belongs to the stomach-spleen meridian. The questions here are different, namely very personal: What am I currently having to digest in my own life? Where am I worrying too much about others and forgetting myself in the process? What is weighing heavily on my stomach – both literally and figuratively?

This distinction is not a diagnosis, but an invitation to self-reflection. Sometimes this one question alone – upper or lower jaw? – is enough to trigger an inner process of insight that goes deeper than any X-ray findings.

The tooth-organ relationships at a glance

Incisors (teeth 11, 12, 21, 22 / 31, 32, 41, 42) – Kidney, bladder and the life force

The central and lateral incisors – teeth 11, 12, 21 and 22 at the top and teeth 31, 32, 41 and 42 at the bottom – are at the center of a remarkably extensive network. The upper incisors are organically connected to the right and left kidneys, the lower ones to the right and left bladder and the urogenital area. There are also connections to the gallbladder and liver. At the level of the endocrine glands, there is a connection to the pineal gland, which controls melatonin production and thus the sleep-wake rhythm, among other things. As a sensory organ, the eye is assigned to this area, which explains why visual complaints are sometimes associated with the kidney meridian in holistic medicine. At the level of the spine, the connections are at L3, L2 and Co – i.e. in the lumbar and sacral regions – and at S4 and S5 in the sacral region. The associated joints are the back of the knee and the sacral coccyx, the spinal cord segments include L3, L2, S4, S5 and Co. There are also references to back pain and headaches as other correspondences. The active period of this meridian is between 5 and 7 pm for the kidney (Yin) and between 3 and 5 pm for the bladder (Yang).

In TCM, the kidneys are regarded as the seat of the primordial force – the deepest life energy that we have brought into the world and that sustains us throughout our lives. They guard the so-called Jing, the essential life essence, which is depleted by exhaustion, stress and overload. Psychosomatically, the kidneys are associated with issues such as fear, existential insecurity and the feeling of not being carried. As the kidney is also a couple’s organ, its psychological dimension goes even deeper: it also carries the fears and insecurities that arise in close relationships. The fear of being abandoned. The fear of not being enough. The feeling of not being able to feel safe in a partnership, a mother-daughter relationship or a deep friendship. Where two people are in a close relationship and this relationship is permeated by insecurity or fear, the kidney has a say.

As the kidney’s partner, the bladder carries the emotions of control and letting go. Pain in the bladder meridian is often reflected in tension along the back, in the lumbar and sacral area – and sometimes also in teeth that simply cannot come to rest.

Canines (teeth 13, 23 / 33, 43) – Liver, gallbladder and the courage to push the boundaries

The canines – teeth 13 and 23 at the top and teeth 33 and 43 at the bottom – belong to the liver and gallbladder meridians. The upper canines are organically connected to the liver on the right and left, the lower ones to the gallbladder on the right and left. On the endocrine level, the upper canines show a connection to the thyroid gland, the lower ones to the gonads – an indication of the close connection between liver energy, the hormonal system and the reproductive axis. As a sensory organ, nose and smell are assigned to this area, and at the joint level, the shoulder and elbow as well as the radial hand and big toe. The vertebrae are located at H7, H6, H5, B4 and B3 as well as L5 and L4 – i.e. in the cervical and thoracic spine area as well as in the lower lumbar segment. The spinal cord segments include Th8, Th9 and Th10. The gallbladder meridian is active between 11 pm and 1 am (Yang), the liver meridian between 1 am and 3 am (Yin) – both deep night hours, which explains why teeth grinding and inner restlessness occur so frequently during these hours. On the other level, there are references to the mammary gland on the right and left.

In TCM, the liver is the organ of planning, of pushing forward, of decision-making power. It loves movement and freedom. What it doesn’t like: stagnation, suppressed anger, pent-up feelings. In my practice, I experience time and again that people with chronic liver and gallbladder complaints grind their teeth at night – and it is precisely there, on the canines, that you often see the first signs of abrasion. Bruxism is no coincidence. It is often the body’s nocturnal attempt to process what was not allowed to be expressed during the day: Frustration, repressed aggression, the swallowing of words. The fact that the liver meridian peaks between 1 and 3 a.m. makes this connection even more tangible.

The gallbladder stands for courage and decisiveness. The upper premolars are organically connected to the lungs, the lower ones to the right and left colon and the ileum, the lower section of the small intestine, and show additional connections to allergies – reflecting the close connection between colon health, immune response and mucosal activity in holistic medicine. At the endocrine level, the upper premolars show a connection to the thymus, the central organ of immune maturation, and the lower premolars to lymph vessels and veins. The tongue and taste are assigned to this area as sensory organs, while the jaw and knee are assigned to the front at the joint level. The vertebrae are located at B12, B11 and L1 – i.e. in the transition from the thoracic to the lumbar spine. The spinal cord segments include Th12 and Th11 as well as L1. The lung meridian is active between 3 and 5 o’clock (Yin), the large intestine meridian between 5 and 7 o’clock (Yang) – the early morning hours when respiratory and intestinal complaints are often most noticeable.

The lung is the organ of the boundary between inside and outside – it breathes in the world and releases what has been processed. In TCM, it is the organ of grief. People who carry old grief, who cannot cry or let go, burden their lung energy. As its partner in the meridian pair, the large intestine stands for elimination, for letting go of what is no longer needed – both physically and emotionally. Constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, but also holding on to old relationships, old patterns, old pain – all of this belongs to the topic of the large intestine. It is no coincidence that allergies appear as another reference: in holistic medicine, an excessive immune reaction is often seen as an expression of a boundary that the body can no longer clearly draw – an issue that directly affects the lungs and colon on a psychosomatic level.

Problems at the premolars can therefore be an indication: What are you holding on to that you should actually be allowed to let go of? The fact that the CNS and psyche, inner ear and pituitary gland are anchored in this area makes it clear that the wisdom teeth touch the innermost part of the human experience – listening inwards, the sense of one’s own center, the ability to guide oneself. The fact that they so often find no place – literally in the jaw – is perhaps one of the most telling findings in holistic dentistry.

Particularly relevant in holistic medicine and especially in relation to tooth-organ relationships is the concept of the so-called focus. A focus is a chronically inflamed area in the body that can exert remote effects on other organs via nerve and meridian connections. Dead teeth (root canal treatment), chronic inflammation of the gums or poorly healed extraction sites can represent such foci.

This does not mean that every root-treated tooth has to come out. But it does mean that if someone is repeatedly suffering from a certain organ despite all treatments, it is worth including the mouth in the diagnostic considerations. Biological dentistry works closely with integrative medicine – and this collaboration can sometimes be the decisive piece of the puzzle.

What you can take away from this

You don’t have to run straight to the biological dentist (environmental medicine, by the way, if you want to google it) and re-map your mouth. But I invite you to take an initial, careful look at the topic of tooth-organ relationships:
Which tooth has repeatedly caused you problems in recent years?
Is it perhaps located on a meridian whose issues are familiar to you?
And: Is the problem located in the upper jaw – perhaps in the legacy of generations before you – or in the lower jaw, i.e. in what you are currently living and wearing yourself?

The body speaks. It speaks in symptoms, in places of pain, in what keeps coming back. The teeth are a particularly silent, particularly direct part of this language. If you learn to read them – not as evidence, but as an invitation to self-reflection – a fascinating dimension of self-awareness opens up.

Your mouth is not separate from your life.
